Reversably attach Blackout Blocks™ to the blackout liner and magnetically seal out the light from your window.

Peel the adhesive backing (non-damaging) and stick the window plate to your frame.
Slide off the Blackout Block cover.
Place it over the blackout liner and slide to attach.

To let in light, pull the attached block away; to darken, reattach it magnetically.

Other blackout curtains only block light through the fabric itself, which allows light to leak in around the edges. OtterSpace uses a patented edge-seal system that blocks light from the top, sides, bottom, and between panels, creating true total darkness.

Do I need tools to install OtterSpace blackout curtains?

Nope! Everything needed for installation is included in the kit. Our patented total blackout system can be installed in minutes.

Are OtterSpace blackout curtains portable for travel?

Yes! The blackout panels and magnets are removable and reusable, making them popular for hotels, short-term rentals, and travel. When using the system for travel, you’ll need an additional set of non-damaging, removable adhesive (available here). Optional extra window plates are available if you’d like to keep your home setup installed while traveling.

How do they attach to the window?

OtterSpace blackout curtains attach using a patented magnetic edge-seal system designed to block light without drilling or permanent hardware.

Removable, non-damaging window plates are placed around the window frame using adhesive designed to hold through temperature changes. Magnets are clipped onto the curtain panel along the edges and magnetically connect to these blackout plates, creating a secure seal that blocks light where it typically leaks in.

The curtain panel itself can be:

Hung with the included curtain rings on a standard or double curtain rod, or
Installed without a rod

This flexible system allows OtterSpace to work with many window types while remaining renter-friendly and easy to remove or reuse.

Can I use them horizontally or vertically?

OtterSpace blackout curtains can be used both horizontally or vertically, depending on how they are hung.

When hung on a curtain rod, panels should be used vertically, just like traditional curtains. When installed without a rod using the magnetic edge-seal system, panels can be used either vertically or horizontally, allowing you to adapt them to different window sizes and layouts.

This flexibility makes OtterSpace a good option for wide windows, sliding doors, and non-standard openings.

The curtain panels are modular, so multiple panels can be used side by side to block light across larger windows.

Can they be cut to size?

They can be cut to size, but we generally recommend leaving them as is.

Any extra fabric does not reduce blackout performance, and keeping the panels uncut allows you to reuse them for larger windows, future moves, or travel. Many customers find it helpful to have that extra flexibility over time.

If you prefer a closer fit to the size of your window, you can also fold in the sides or fold over the top when hanging without a curtain rod to better match your window size, without permanently altering the panel.

How do the magnetic blackout blocks work?

The magnetic blackout blocks are designed to seal the edges of the curtain to the window frame, which is where light usually leaks in.

Small, removable window plates are placed around the window frame using non-damaging adhesive. Magnets are reversibly clipped along the edges of the blackout curtain panel and attach magnetically to the window plates, pulling the fabric snug against the window edge and creating a tight light seal.

This system blocks light at the top, sides, bottom, and between panels, allowing OtterSpace to achieve true total darkness. Something other blackout curtains can’t do with fabric alone.

The magnets can also be repositioned or re-clipped, so the same panel can be adjusted for different window sizes or reused when you move or travel.

What if I don’t want to use adhesive?

The standard OtterSpace installation uses removable, non-damaging adhesive, which works well for most customers because it holds securely through temperature changes while allowing the system to be removed or repositioned without permanent damage.

What sizes are OtterSpace blackout curtains?

Each Total Blackout Kit includes one 50" wide panel, available in 57", 78", or 91" lengths, designed to work on its own or behind standard curtain lengths.

Panels can be combined for larger windows. A detailed size guide is available to help you choose the right setup.

Will OtterSpace blackout curtains work with my existing blinds or curtains?

Absolutely! If you aren't using a curtain rod, you can use the blackout layer on its own by placing it behind your blinds, as shown in our portable blackout option. Just ensure you have about 1.5 inches of clearance behind your blinds for the blackout blocks to fit.

If you use a curtain rod, many customers find it easier to remove their blinds entirely (highly recommended if using a curtain rod), as they become unnecessary. However, if you prefer to keep the blinds, you can use the blackout layer in front of them, but it may be challenging to block out every bit of light, and you may see light leaks. We recommend removing the blinds for a simpler installation, smoother use, and optimal light-blocking capabilities.

What OtterSpace blackout products do I need for my window?

The Total Blackout Kit can be used in so many ways!

Use without a curtain rod: Attach the blackout panel directly to your window frame using our magnetic edge-seal system.

Use with a curtain rod: Hang the blackout panel on a curtain rod using the included curtain rings. It works on its own or layered with our outer curtains or behind your existing decorative curtains as a blackout liner (we highly recommend removing blinds when hanging on a curtain rod for 100% blackout).

Have curtains already?: Simply hang the blackout panel behind your current curtains on the same rod or on a double rod (we highly recommend removing blinds for complete blackout).

Want a complete set?: Our Blackout Bundles include both the blackout panel and coordinating outer curtains, designed to layer together seamlessly on a curtain rod.

Large or wide windows: Multiple blackout panels can be placed side-by-side to maintain full edge sealing and complete darkness.
